Pregnancy Update

July has arrived, and with it (hopefully soon) ME is expecting some babies. I have a few girls here who appear to be pregnant, and I’m giving them all daily pep talks trying to speed things along. I took a couple (bad, sorry) pictures today of two of the girls – Evita and Fluke:

Evita (classic) bred with Wasp (classic) this year. The babies from this pairing tend to be very dark and speckled. This is mama Evita:

Fluke (classic) bred with Jenga (caramel) this year. This is a new pairing, so it will be exciting to see what these babies look like. This is mama Fluke:
Fluke Jul 2014Fluke Jul 2014

Those photos ended up being really dark and awful, so I’ll get some outdoor shots of these gals, my other possible preggo, and probably some of the other skinks as well.

I had not mentioned it on the website before, but my irian jayas (Izuru and Mizu) also locked up a couple times, but the pairings didn’t seem to take. Now Izuru has swollen up quite a lot, so it’s possible she might be making a few babies too. She was not willing to join in today’s photoshoot, but you can see photos of both parents here: http://melsexotics.com/me-collection/blue-tongue-skinks/irian-jaya-bts/

To make sure I have enough babies to go around I’m also planning to bring in some babies from a breeder in the US. Once that’s finalized and the babies arrive I’ll post it here. Those babies will be available to people on the Waitlist first. There is still time to be added to the Waitlist before any babies arrive, just let me know 🙂

There’s been some various other happenings around here, but mostly it’s been a lot of staring into tanks hoping for tiny faces to look back at me 🙂 I’ll be sure to post when that happens!

Many thanks,
Melanie

Hello World

Hello world.

It’s been a while, and I’m overdue for a check-in. I apologize to everyone who’s been trying to contact me this winter; I’ve been ill for a while now, and it’s taken all my energy just to look after the animals. I’m recovering slowly, and will try to get back to everyone who contacted me.

In March I had two pairs of northerns lock up. I’m 95% sure at least one female is pregnant. Babies are expected sometime from June-August. I will be starting a waiting list, and first in line will be those who’ve contacted me already.

I’ll post again soon with who’s expecting, and maybe a few new pictures.

Many thanks,
Melanie

Big Babies

I had a request for a photo of one of the babies with something for size comparison. Naturally, I used this as an excuse for an impromptu photoshoot for the 5 remaining babies.

Note: There are no more 2013 babies available. 2014 babies are expected in late spring.

To show how big the babies are I took photos of them on a 2×4. It is 14 inches long.

Happy New Years!

It’s officially 2014 now, which means ME is looking forward to an amazing year ahead. 2013 was a hard year for me, but it was my amazing customers who made all the work worthwhile. I cannot say how much I love to see photos and hear updates on my babies. I have the best customers; thank you all!

To celebrate the new year I took some new pictures of the few remaining babies here at ME. There are currently seven young blue tongues still here, though only 3 are still available. I took New Years photos of all seven.

I’m also happy to introduce five new fat tails here at ME 🙂 These guys are from Ohio Gecko in the USA and bring some very neat new morphs to my group. In order, there is one male (a zero het super zero), his two girlfriends (stinger het super stinger and a super stinger), and two starburst gals too. I also have a brand new vision rack on order for all the geckos to move into; I’ll be sure to take lots of photos when it arrives. For now here’s some pictures from when these geckos arrived:

Home for the Holidays $50 Discount

In an effort to get some of these babies into their new homes for the holidays I am offering a $50 discount on any baby that leaves by Monday, December 16.

December 16 is also the last day for shipments to go out until after the holiday rush. This is because we will not risk babies during the craziness of holiday-shipping season. I also cannot ship if the weather is nasty along the shipping route – we only ship when it’s safe for the babies.

There are currently 6 babies available (Tarzan, Tiberius, Tobias, Travis, Turk, & Tyler). I will try to upload some new photos this weekend of who’s still here.

The 2013 MRBE

Last weekend was the 2013 Manitoba Reptile Breeders Expo, and it was a ton of fun. I love expos – I get to talk about reptiles non-stop and nobody thinks I’m crazy 😀

And because I love pictures, I snapped a few to share!

There were so many other amazing animals I wanted to take photos of, but the show was super busy and I didn’t get to go for another round of pictures. It was a fantastic show and I’m looking forward to seeing it continue to grow in 2014 🙂

Some quick photos

Well I’m back from my trip out west and working on catching up on e-mails again. I’ve had some requests for new photos of the available babies, so I snapped a few as I was getting the babies ready for playtime today.

The photos were taken quickly and aren’t exactly great, but I hope you enjoy 🙂 The babies are growing quickly and are definitely adorable.

Make sure to check the Available Page to see which babies are still looking for new homes.

Talos:
How has no one taken Talos home yet? He’s gorgeous, sweet, and he’s named after a god, lol. I love this big guy.

Tarzan:
Tarzan decided to have an adventure by running off during his photo shoot. He ended up under a stack of tanks, but was lured out with some super worms. This little guy has always loved to be on the move.

Taz:
Taz is my bright little holdback. He’s not available – he’ll be staying here as a future breeder.

Tiberius:
I’ve been calling him Tibbers – he’s a doll and one of the ones I’d love to keep for myself. I think he’ll be shedding again right away.

Tobias:
I never would have guessed Tobias would develop such bold colours! He really stands out from his siblings, wow.

Trevor:
Poor Trevor just started shedding today, so he looks like he’s falling to pieces, lol.

Turk:
Turk obviously decided that wiping his mouth off after dinner last night was optional. His reward was a damp cloth to clean his face before being allowed into the play tank.

Tyler:
Tyler is so pretty and sweet <3 He’s a pretty hefty little guy too.

Hannibal:
Hannibal was originally going to be my holdback, because he reminds me of his mother (who just went back home to Regina), but I don’t really have space for more than one holdback. I have one person who expressed interest already, but if that doesn’t pan out Hannibal will be put up as available soon.

I should also note that on my trip out West I picked up an old friend 🙂 Cow, my very first reptile, is now back home and has already shed and chowed down on a couple mice. I really missed my beautiful buddy – I’m so glad to have her back 😀

Baby Play Time

I updated my baby play-tank and then had the whole gang out for some exercise together recently. Each baby had a number painted on it’s back so I wouldn’t get confused, and then I spent a good hour watching them explore the new tank, interact with each other (never leave them unsupervised), and snapping adorable photos. So of course I had to share:

Shipping to the USA

I frequently get asked about shipping to the US, or to other countries. This is not something I currently do. Not only is the cost prohibitive to get skinks into other countries, but the skinks I currently breed are quite readily available, especially in the USA.

If you’re looking for a baby outside of Canada, please check out the recommended breeders list at http://www.bluetongueskinks.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=19635

And feel free to shoot me an e-mail if you have any questions or would like a recommendation on who might have babies available.

I’ll work on getting a new page up soon listing all my favourite breeders from around the world. One of the best things about blue tongues is the world-wide community 😀

Many thanks,
Melanie
