Looking for New Homes

There’s two local critters here in Manitoba, Canada looking for great new homes. If you’d like the contact information for either owner, let me know 🙂

The first critter looking for a new home is actually Baby Fresca (now Jenny), who was born here in 2012. Her owner is moving to an apartment that doesn’t allow pets, so Jenny is looking for a great new home. Jenny is going for $200 including her tank.

The second critter is a 2 y/o Hermann’s tortoise owned by a friend of mine in Inglis, MB. This adorable tort is looking for an amazing home to spoil him 🙂 He’s (probably) male and is available for $400.

Unfortunately I’m having some technical difficulties uploading photos at the moment, so if you’d like pictures of either critter please contact me by e-mail at MelanieJPratt@gmail.com.

Back from the dead.

Hi everyone. I know I fell off the Earth for a little while, but I’m working my way back. I’ll be trying to reply to any e-mails I missed, and get new photos up when I can. The babies are doing great – constantly hungry and growing fast. I’m ordering in new shipping supplies now, so should be able to ship again starting Monday, September 9.

Somewhat of an aside, but I am considering taking 2014 off from breeding skinks. I will still post links to a couple other breeders who might have babies, and other updates (maybe about my fat tails), but I likely will not produce any BTS babies myself. Just a heads up.

Summer Photoshoot: Babies

All the 2013 babies got a bit of time outside today for the photoshoot. Each of the 17 babies still here has two new photos 🙂

Unfortunately some babies were shedding, and sometimes the sun was hiding, so some of the photos aren’t great. Hopefully another photoshoot soon will yield better results for the few who’s photos aren’t perfect today. So look forward to another baby-photoshoot coming soon.

I’ve had many people asking for little personality-profiles on the babies (which babies are friendly, explorative, cuddly, etc). Over the next week I will write up short blurbs about each baby on the available page, so be sure to check it out 🙂

Note: All the babies still living here at ME are pictured, but some are already spoken for. To see which babies are still available, check the Available Page.

Behind the Scenes – Geckos

To break up the constant stream of baby skink photos (there’s more coming, no worries) here’s some pictures of the geckos living here at ME 🙂

Yesterday was cleaning/feeding day for the geckos. I have three groups of young geckos here:
My patternless fat tails:

My caramel fat tails:

And my whiteout group of fat tails:
Whiteout Fatties

While I cleaned out their bins the geckos got a short bath. Unlike the baby skinks, the fatties do not get regular baths – they actually notice each other and must be watched very closely (I don’t want any underaged breeding during bath time). One benefit of the bath though is I get to help out with any leftover shed. This time two geckos had a bit of shed on their toes, and one had some shed on her head:

The toe shed is super easy to remove, but the head shed took a bit of extra effort. Thanks to a small piece of wet paper towel and a moist q-tip, she was back to her usual gorgeous self in no time:

While the geckos were in the bath, I cleaned out their bins. The bins were pretty dirty to start with:

Everything is removed, the geckos are put in the bath, and I get to work doing a quick scrub-down of the bins:

Then the bins get new paper towel (lightly sprayed) and the moist hide is soaked down and replaced. Before going home the geckos get a quick cuddle/checked for shed:

For feeding times all my geckos get a nice yummy dish of mealworms, lightly dusted with calcium-plus:

I also have a group of three adult fat tails living together in a large PVC tank. The male only eats frozen/thawed pinky mice, but I’m trying to convert him over. This group also got fed and I took a few quick photos:

Lastly, and not a gecko, my boa Pooch also got fed. He’s a hungry little bugger now, and tried to rush me when I was taking too long to give him his rat, lol. He’s a wonderful snake, and I’m glad he’s finally got his appetite turned on 😀

I hope you’re enjoying these little peaks into life here at ME. I promise there’s more baby photos on the way!

Behind the Scenes – Babies

Looking after a horde of animals means spending a lot of time cleaning, feeding, playing, and cleaning some more. Today I took some photos of what the babies did for a quick behind-the-scenes look at life here at ME.

First off I gave all the babies a bath. Bathtime here serves a few purposes: the babies get a drink of water, I get to make sure there’s no issues like stuck shed, and I can clean out all the bins while the babies are soaking. It’s also a great time for some pictures.

The babies also get weighed regularly to make sure they’re growing well:

For feeding time I first prepare a yummy meal (today was an egg, a bit of dog food, and some greens) and cut 10 regular food dishes in half to make 20 baby-size dishes. The babies eat stunningly tiny amounts compared to the adults:

And then the little guys get to chow down:

A few notes:
1) You may have noticed there are only 14 caramels in today’s photos. One baby was very weak; he had some internal issues and sadly did not make it. All the remaining babies are eating and pooping constantly – a great sign that they’re healthy little squirts.
2) One caramel baby is missing the very tip of it’s tail. It’s possible it was born that way or that a sibling grabbed it when they were first born. The baby is perfectly healthy (may even be a holdback, he’s so pretty), I just wanted to address it in case anyone was wondering.
3) So far two babies have started shedding. I expect the rest should start in the next couple days. Hopefully the majority will be done by next weekend so I can get some pretty photos of them for the available page 🙂
4) Still no change in my other possible-preggo girls. Fat and lazy as usual, lol.

I hope you enjoyed the photos. This week the babies will start being handled much more and maybe even take their first trip outdoors 🙂 So stay tuned for more photos.

Classic Northern Babies!

Hank the classic northern gave birth to 6 adorable little babies!

Classic BabyClassic Baby

All the current babies are approaching their first shed. As they finish shedding I’ll take better pictures of each one and post them on the available page. At that time I will post an update on the main page and then begin accepting reservations. It will still be a few more weeks until any of them are ready to be sold/shipped though.

Right now all the babies are little eating/pooping machines who are slowly getting the idea that I’m not going to eat them. I’ll try to post some more photos (maybe of playtime tomorrow) tomorrow 🙂

I also have two other skinks who might be pregnant, but I’m really not sure any more. They’re both fat and lazy right now, but that’s pretty much their natural state. I’ll be sure to post an update if either pops 🙂

Many thanks,
Melanie

Caramel Northern Babies!

I am ecstatic to announce that Trouble, my caramel northern female, gave birth to 15 adorable babies yesterday (June 20)!

These are the first caramel northerns born in Canada! The caramel line originated in the USA from line-breeding done by the amazing James Wilson. My caramel female is directly from his wonderful line.

The proud mama, Trouble:
Mama Trouble

Trouble went from being over 700g to dropping to 365g. She is flat as a pancake now – she’ll need several good meals to get back to her normal rotund shape. Before and after photos (click to see larger images):

The father of these babies is the exceptionally gorgeous Jenga:

And finally, some photos of the babies:

There are 3 babies not pictured. One, the smallest baby, is very weak right now; I didn’t want to pester him too much outside of making sure he had some food and water. The other two somehow just got passed over during photo time (I must have skipped part of a row). I’ll try to figure out who I missed and get photos of them up too.

Once the babies complete their first sheds I’ll create a page for the entire litter with many more pictures so you can really see what each one looks like 😀

My fingers are crossed for a couple more successful litters this year; my classic northern and irian jaya girls are looking very promising!

My Friend John

Up here in Canada there really aren’t that many people working with blue tongue skinks. I became interested in them about a decade ago, and only started breeding in 2011. But out in Ontario there’s a wonderful man who’s been breeding blue tongues longer than I even knew they existed. His name is John Delahaye, and I’m happy to announce his first litter of 2013 northerns popped last week 😀

Here are some pictures John sent me of his new litter of 5 from mother Annie (isn’t she stunning!):

John is also expecting another litter from mother Fiona, due any day:

John lives around Kingston, ON. If anyone is interested in John’s babies, I believe most of Annie’s babies are already spoken for, but there’s still Fiona’s litter 🙂 I will vouch that he is one of the greats in the blue tongue skink world – absolutely fantastic to do business with. And it helps that his skinks are so beautiful. If you’d like his contact information let me know!

Lastly, he sent me a couple pictures of ‘baby’ Elaine, who was born here at ME in 2012. John and I did a 2-for-2 bloodline trade last year 🙂 Elaine is looking fabulous, and John’s skinks here (Alrick and Harris) are amazingly stunning <3
