J-Litter Pictures

Mel’s Exotics is working on a few things right now, including some new additions and even a move to a commercial space 😀 Busy times!

For now, all the babies in the J-litter have now finished shedding, and I’ve taken much better photos of each one. I still plan to take some outdoor photos, but these will do for now 🙂

Fluke Babies Have Names

The Fluke x Jenga babies are now two weeks old, and have officially received their ID names. I also took photos of each of them, but since most are in shed the photos are pretty awful. I’ll give the babies a bath to clear the shed and get some new photos up ASAP so people can start reserving them 🙂

I also took photos of the IJ babies that I picked up from Ray Gurgui in the USA. There are 7 baby IJs total; 3-4 will be available. Each has cost me nearly $250 to get here, so the IJs will definitely cost more than the northerns this year.

I’ll be updating everything on the website as quickly as I can, and contacting everyone on the waiting list to pick out babies and set up shipping 🙂 Until then all the babies pictured here are still considered on hold.

For now, here’s some awful pictures of some cute baby skinks:

The IJ babies don’t have names, just numbers 02-08. Yes, number 06 is missing his tail – he was born without it. It doesn’t hurt him in any way, he just looks a bit different. He’s also the sweetest and most laid back, probably because everyone wants to cuddle the oddball babies 🙂

A Familiar Face

I recently picked up one of my 2012 babies from a customer who’s downsizing their collection. The skink’s baby name was Fyre; he was from a Fluke x Wasp litter. I figured I’d snap a few pictures to show what a pretty lad he’s grown to be 🙂

This is Fyre as a baby (3 weeks old):

And here is Fyre now (2 years old):
Fyre 2y/o

I put him with his mom, Fluke, as a gender-test. You can see how different they look – Wasp’s genes are very strong and produce very bold northerns with lots of dark and loooong tails. Fluke’s a bit skinny in these pictures since she just had a litter of 13 babies. Fyre is long and skinny naturally, with a chunky big head.

I’ll be looking to find a new home for Fyre now, probably with a breeder who’s interested in produce some dark babies (I’ve been told Wasp babies are very dark and unique; I’ve had a lot of interest from people stateside). For right now though, it’s great to see one of my babies all grown up and looking handsome 😀 He’s also very outgoing and friendly.

Fluke Babies 2014!

Yesterday, July 29, Fluke gave birth to 13 healthy and beautiful baby blueys! As such I am delighted to say I will have more than enough babies available for everyone on the waitlist this year 😀

Fluke is a classic northern. The father of these babies, Jenga, is a caramel northern. It’s hard to tell with newborns, but the babies appear to have the paler, creamier colours of their father. Even so, as they are not pure caramels they are being sold as classic northerns.

In other news, it does not look like Izuru, my irian jaya, is pregnant this year (I had an x-ray taken). I am bringing in 7 baby irian jayas from Ray Gurgui in the USA next week – a few will be available for sale.

Some baby pictures:

Auntie Snoopy was included in the impromptu photoshoot:

And here’s a photo Ray sent me of the IJ litter, and a picture of a baby he kept last year, from the same parents:

(There were 8 in the litter, but one was purchased already. One baby was also born with a stub-tail – he’s perfectly healthy, just a bit different looking.)

Evita Babies Outside

Almost all the babies have shed now (Wade has not, Wilhelm has shed patches), so I took some better photos outdoors. The sun didn’t co-operate until the end, but at least you can see the pretty colours of these babies 🙂

Evita x Wasp Babies Have Names

Naturally, because I wanted to do ID pictures today, yesterday the babies started going into shed. I think this happens every year… Regardless, I did give all the babies their official IDs, and took several pictures of each. Twelve of the babies are now considered available (Wade, the runt, is not).

I’ll start e-mailing those on the Waiting List to choose babies 🙂 Shipping won’t start until next week at the earliest. I am still expecting a litter of Fluke x Jenga babies (they are now officially past due).

Each baby was weighed on empty (not fed/watered that day). For additional pictures of each baby, please see this page: 2014 Evita x Wasp Babies

Baby Bath Time

Hi everyone. The 13 babies born so far are doing very well. On Monday they’ll be two weeks old, and I’ll be giving them their official IDs (names), taking ID pictures of each, and making them available (I’ll be contacting those on the waiting list at that time). They’ll be ready to go starting July 28.

I’m still waiting on babies from Fluke and hopefully Izuru as well. I’m also looking at bringing in a litter of IJs from a breeder in the USA. Updates for those should be coming soon.

On Friday the babies had a group bath and I snapped a few pictures to share 🙂 I also cleaned all the bins and fed everyone.

The little runt baby is doing pretty good. He’s got some gunk in one eye that I haven’t been able to remove yet, but his umbilical is off and he’s eating/pooping like all the others. In these pictures he’s looking a bit skinny, but post bath/food he was a balloon again.

Lastly, my sister got a new puppy. His name is Mouse, he’s a Bernese Mountain Dog, he’s 10 weeks old, and he’s adorable. Here he is with Snoopy, my 11 year old mutt <3

2014 Evita Babies

On July 7, 2014, Evita gave birth to 13 adorable babies. The father of this litter is Wasp (his babies will be given W-names this year).

If you’ve been keeping up, you’ll notice that my recent photoshoot was on the 7th. She started popping the babies out right after having her photos taken 😀 It made for a great day here at ME.

The babies are classic northerns, and will be $200 each (plus shipping whenever needed). There’s currently a waiting list for babies (as of today I’m removing the unconfirmed names from the list). I am still expecting another litter or two of babies this year, and looking at bringing in a litter from the USA as well.

Right now the babies are identified by numbers. These are not permanent IDs (the skinks will be put together at times and re-arranged) so there’s no reserving any specific babies just yet. In about a week they’ll be given their proper IDs (W-names), at which point those on the waiting list can start picking out their baby 🙂

Here’s some photos of the new additions:

Baby 13 is the runt of the litter, and has a few issues. The first is that his umbilical hasn’t come off yet (not a big deal), but the second is that his head is slightly deformed:
W Baby 13W Baby 13
I wasn’t sure how he’d hold up, but since he seemed otherwise normal I’ve been treating him normally – so far he’s just like any of the other babies 🙂 I’m still keeping a closer eye on him, but he’s eating great, so I’m optimistic for his chances. His tongue sticks out one side – it’s pretty cute to watch him explore and flick it around.

Summer 2014 Pictures!

I finally got around to taking some new outdoor photos of many of my skinks. Outdoor photos look so much better 😀

In getting these photos I was bitten once (Taz), pooped on once (Taz), and had to race across the lawn to catch runaways many times, lol. I think the pictures were worth it 🙂 Click the photos to see the larger version.

Taz & Tiberius are two caramel babies from last year who are still here:

Both tried to take off on me during the photoshoot, so they got their photos taken in a bin. Taz is the stub-tail & is my personal holdback. Both are a bit spazzy (they obviously need more hands-on time), but Tiberius takes after his dad in that he’s quite aggressive (thus why he’s not gone to a new home yet).
